Floor tiles in India come in nine body categories, 15 sizes, and 16 finishes. The right floor tile for a living room is different from the right floor tile for a bathroom, a parking area, or a house elevation. The category that goes on the floor determines water absorption, scratch resistance, load capacity, and how the tile performs under daily Indian conditions: bare-foot contact, monsoon humidity, daily mopping with alkaline cleaners, and in outdoor areas, direct summer heat. This guide covers how floor tile types differ, which sizes work for which room, what floor tiles cost in India by category, and the finish rules that determine where a tile can and cannot go. Prices start at Rs. 20 per sq.ft for ceramic and go up to Rs. 300 per sq.ft for large-format vitrified slabs.
Floor Tiles Types in India: Nine Categories Explained
Every floor tile belongs to one of nine body categories. The category determines the tile's technical performance, not just its look. Two tiles that appear identical in a photograph can belong to completely different categories with different correct surfaces and a price difference of Rs. 60 to Rs. 100 per sq.ft.
GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tiles)
GVT is the most widely used floor tile category across Indian homes and commercial spaces. Water absorption is below 0.5% per IS 15622. The glazed surface handles daily mopping with alkaline cleaners without degradation. The range covers 16 finishes and sizes from 400x400mm up to large-format panels. GVT works on both indoor and outdoor floors and walls. Price: Rs. 45 to Rs. 140 per sq.ft.
PGVT (Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles)
PGVT carries a polished surface that creates a mirror-like, reflective floor look. Water absorption is below 0.5% per IS 15622. Price: Rs. 60 to Rs. 180 per sq.ft.
NOTE: PGVT must not be used on wet floors, bathroom floors, kitchen floors, or any outdoor floor surface. The polished finish has near-zero friction when wet.
Double Charge Vitrified Tiles
Double Charge Vitrified Tiles are the category with the highest scratch resistance for dry indoor floors. The colour runs 3 to 4mm into the tile body, which means scratches from sand and grit tracked indoors do not expose a contrasting white body. Best for living rooms and halls where the main door opens directly onto the floor. Price: Rs. 55 to Rs. 110 per sq.ft.
NOTE: Double Charge must not be used on wet floors or outdoor surfaces.
Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain Tiles have a water absorption of 2% to 5%. They work for covered indoor floors and some semi-covered areas. Mostly come in matte finish in the Indian market. Available in 300x300mm, 400x400mm, 500x500mm, 600x600mm, 600x1200mm, and 200x1000mm. Price: Rs. 35 to Rs. 90 per sq.ft.
Full Body Vitrified Tiles
Full Body Vitrified Tiles have a homogeneous body where the colour and composition run through the full tile thickness. This matters on commercial floors where heavy use creates edge wear. Water absorption is below 0.5% per IS 15622. Used in commercial spaces, staircases, and heavy-traffic floors. Price: Rs. 80 to Rs. 220 per sq.ft.
Ceramic Tiles (floor use)
Standard ceramic tiles in 12x18 and 12x24 sizes must never be used on floors. Water absorption of 12% to 16% makes them structurally unsuitable for floor surfaces. The one exception is the 300x300mm (1x1) ceramic size, which can be used on bathroom floors. Price: Rs. 20 to Rs. 55 per sq.ft.
Colour Body Vitrified Tiles
Colour Body Vitrified Tiles are used in architectural and higher-end residential projects. The tile body shade matches the surface, making cut edges and visible joints colour-consistent. Price: Rs. 90 to Rs. 300 per sq.ft.

Floor Tiles Size Guide: Which Size Works Where
Size is the decision that affects how a room feels day to day, not just how it looks in a photograph. The number of grout lines per square metre changes the visual scale of the floor and the cleaning effort required to keep it looking clean.
| Size (mm) | Alias | Best Area | Notes |
| 300x300 | 1x1 | Bathroom floors, outdoor, terrace | Most grout lines per sq.ft. Good anti-skid. |
| 400x400 | 16x16 | Parking, outdoor, balcony, bathroom | Floor only. Not for living rooms. |
| 500x500 | 20x20 | Parking, outdoor, balcony, bathroom | Floor only. Not for living rooms. |
| 600x600 | 2x2 | Living room, bedroom, kitchen, hall | Most popular indoor floor size in India. |
| 600x1200 | 2x4 | Living room, hall, large kitchen | Fewer grout lines. Most popular in flats. |
| 800x1200 | 32x48 | Large living rooms, commercial | Needs flat sub-base. C2 grade adhesive. |
| 800x1600 | 32x64 | Villa halls, hotel lobbies | Large format. Very few grout lines. |
| 200x1000 | 8x40 | Bedroom, living room (wood-look) | Plank format for wood-look floor tiles. |
| 200x1200 | 8x48 | Bedroom, living room (wood-look) | Plank format for wood-look floor tiles. |
NOTE: 300x450mm (12x18) and 300x600mm (12x24) tiles must NEVER be used on any floor. These are wall-only sizes regardless of category or finish.
Floor Tiles Texture and Finish: What Each Surface Delivers
The finish of a floor tile determines slip resistance, cleaning frequency, and where it can safely go. This is a technical specification, not a style preference.
| Finish | Anti-Skid | Wet Floor Use | Outdoor Use | Best For |
| Matte | High | Yes | Yes | All floor types. Best all-round choice. |
| GHR (Glaze High Resistance) | Highest | Yes | Yes | Parking, outdoor, commercial floors. |
| Rain Drops | Very High | Yes | Yes | Bathrooms, surfaces with standing water. |
| Sugar | Moderate | Dry floors only | No | Dry indoor floors. Contemporary look. |
| Matte Carving | High | Yes | No (grooves) | Dry indoor floors. Living room, bedroom. |
| Posh | Moderate | No | No | Dry living rooms. Near-zero reflection. |
| Glossy | Low | NO | NO | Dry living room/hall floors ONLY. |
| High Glossy | Very Low | NO | NO | Dry indoor floors ONLY. Shows marks. |
| Satin Matte | Very Low | NO | NO | Dry living room ONLY. |
| Semi Polished | Low | NO | NO | Not recommended for general flooring. |
NOTE: Glossy, High Glossy, Semi High Glossy, Super High Glossy, Satin Matte, and Semi Polished finishes must NOT be used on wet floors, bathroom floors, kitchen floors, or outdoor floor areas. This applies regardless of tile category, brand, or price point.
Floor Tiles Design: Patterns, Layouts, and What Works in Indian Homes
Marble-look floor tiles are the most ordered floor tile design in India. White and ivory marble patterns with grey veining in 2x4 glossy or polished GVT are the standard choice for living rooms and halls across Indian flats.
Stone-look and cement-look floor tiles in matte or GHR finish are the most practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, utility areas, and high-traffic spaces. Grey and beige stone-look tiles are particularly common in contemporary Indian kitchen floor designs.
Wood-look floor tiles in 8x40 (200x1000mm) or 8x48 (200x1200mm) give the visual warmth of timber flooring without wood's moisture sensitivity in Indian humidity. Matte or sugar finish in brown, wenge, and natural wood tones. Used in bedrooms, study rooms, and living rooms.
Geometric and pattern floor tiles are used as feature floors or accent zones within a larger neutral floor. A geometric tile in a foyer or pooja room entry, combined with a plain tile in the adjoining space, is a common hall floor design in Indian homes.
Layout direction. A 2x4 tile laid with the longer side running along the length of a room makes the room look longer. A staggered 50% offset pattern gives a more dynamic grid. A 2x2 tile laid diagonally (45 degrees) makes a compact room feel larger, but adds 10 to 15% wastage to the tile quantity.
Floor Tiles Price in India: What to Budget by Category
Floor tile prices in India depend on four variables: body category, size, finish, and brand. These are indicative market ranges for 2025-26. Actual prices vary by region, dealer margin, and order volume.

| Ceramic 1x1 (bathroom floor only) | 300x300mm | Matte | Rs. 20 to Rs. 55/sq.ft |
| Porcelain | 400x400 to 600x600mm | Matte | Rs. 35 to Rs. 90/sq.ft |
| GVT | 600x600mm (2x2) | Matte or Glossy | Rs. 45 to Rs. 95/sq.ft |
| GVT | 600x1200mm (2x4) | Matte or Glossy | Rs. 55 to Rs. 110/sq.ft |

For a standard 12x14 ft living room (168 sq.ft), tile material cost runs Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 30,000 depending on category. Add 8 to 10% for wastage, adhesive, grout, and fixing labour on top. For a 350 sq.ft car parking area, budget Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 42,000 for tile material alone.
Non-Slip Floor Tiles: The Finishes That Actually Deliver Grip
Non-slip floor tiles in India are one of the most misused terms in the market. Every dealer uses it; most do not define it. Here is what it actually means for Indian floor tile surfaces.
Slip resistance is measured as a coefficient of friction (CoF). A wet floor needs a CoF above 0.4 to be considered safe for bare-foot contact. The finishes that meet this threshold on Indian floor tiles are matte, GHR, rain drops, sugar, and texture punch.
Matte GVT in 2x2 or 2x4 is the correct non-slip floor tile for living rooms, kitchens, and hallways. GHR GVT in 16x16 or 20x20 is the correct non-slip floor tile for parking, outdoor, and heavy-traffic commercial floors. Rain drops GVT in any size is the correct non-slip floor tile for bathrooms and areas with standing water.
NOTE: Glossy, High Glossy, Satin Matte, and Semi Polished finishes must not be described as non-slip. These finishes fail the CoF threshold when wet. A dealer who calls a glossy tile anti-skid without a CoF test result should be asked to provide the test certificate.

FAQs
Floor tiles in India come in seven body categories used on floors: GVT, PGVT, Double Charge, Full Body, Colour Body, Porcelain, and Ceramic (1x1 size only). Each has a different water absorption rate, correct surface type, and price range. GVT is the most widely used because it works on both indoor and outdoor floors with water absorption below 0.5% per IS 15622.
The most commonly used floor tile sizes in India are 600x600mm (2x2) and 600x1200mm (2x4). The 2x2 size works in rooms up to around 120 sq.ft. The 2x4 size is preferred in larger living rooms and halls because it creates fewer grout lines and makes the space read as more continuous. For parking and outdoor floors, 400x400mm and 500x500mm are the correct sizes.
Matte, GHR, rain drops, and sugar finishes give anti-skid performance on Indian floor tiles. Matte GVT is the standard for indoor floors. GHR GVT is the strongest choice for outdoor and parking floors. Rain drops GVT gives the highest anti-skid performance for bathroom floors. Glossy, High Glossy, and Satin Matte finishes must not be used on any wet or outdoor floor.
Floor tiles in India range from Rs. 20 per sq.ft for ceramic 1x1 (bathroom use only) to Rs. 300 per sq.ft for large-format colour body vitrified. Standard GVT in 2x2 or 2x4 for living room floors runs Rs. 45 to Rs. 110 per sq.ft. Porcelain for covered outdoor or bathroom floors runs Rs. 35 to Rs. 90 per sq.ft. Prices vary by brand, size, and region.
Wood-look floor tiles use a digital print of wood grain on a vitrified or porcelain tile body. The two sizes made for this look are 200x1000mm (8x40) and 200x1200mm (8x48), which mimic the plank proportions of timber flooring. Matte and sugar finishes replicate the texture of real wood. These tiles handle Indian humidity without the warping or mould issues that natural timber flooring faces in monsoon conditions.
The 300x450mm (12x18) and 300x600mm (12x24) sizes are wall-only and must never be used on floors. Floor tiles must also meet anti-skid requirements for wet areas: glossy and polished finishes that work on walls cannot go on bathroom or kitchen floors. Ceramic tiles (except 1x1 size) and PGVT must not be used on wet or outdoor floors.
Light colours (white, ivory, beige, light grey) make rooms feel larger and reflect more light, which works well in compact Indian apartments. Darker colours absorb light and work better in larger rooms. For outdoor and parking floors, mid-tone grey, beige, or stone tones show less dirt and tyre deposits than white or very light tiles.
You can use the same tile design family on both surfaces, but the finish must be different. Use a matte, GHR, or sugar finish on the floor and a glossy or polished version of the same design on the wall. Never use a glossy tile on a bathroom, kitchen, or outdoor floor, even if the same tile in glossy is correct for the adjacent wall.
